The Cave Monastery of Vardzia

The magnificent Vardzia Cave Monastery was carved into the slopes of the Erusteti Mountain in 12th Century Georgia and was invaded and sacked during the Persian invasion in 1551.

The Secret Chamber also known as the Sakhli, contained a large amount of silver, gold, precious stones and religious artifacts.

The great Queen Tamar’s remains are believed to be hidden in the Sakhli under the monastery.
